What is Blu-Ray?
What is Blu-ray? No, not a creature of the deep or any mythical beast. Blu-ray is a media or third-generation digital data storage technology for the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of corporate media and technology leaders electronics. Blu-ray discs are currently competing with HD-DVD to become the new optical disc format. They have much more storage capacity and speed data transfer than conventional DVD's and CD's.
Blu-ray Disc optical disc Versus Other
A Blu-ray, is very similar to any other optical disc, including CD of the first generation, second generation DVD, and competence of third-generation HD DVD.
A disk system Blu-ray uses a blue-violet laser with a wavelength of 405 nanometers to write and read data on optical disk. This laser is the source of the name of the Blu-ray technology which differs from Blu-ray optical media generation earlier. The 405 nm blue-violet laser is also used for writing and reading data in third-generation HD DVD discs, which have less data storage capacity per layer. Major media require a red laser optical data storage and retrieval.
Blu-ray storage capacity
The system of Blu-ray uses a shorter wavelength than the conventional optical discs (CD systems use a red laser with a wavelength of 780 nanometers, while the DVD systems use the same red laser with a wavelength of 650 nanometers). The length shorter wavelength means more accurate data recording, which allows more data to be packed on the surface of Blu-ray discs to a CD or similar surface DVD. In fact, a standard single-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 25 GB of digital data, more than five times the storage capacity of conventional DVD. A double layer Blu-ray discs can store up to 50 GB of digital data. On the drawing board are quad-layer Blu-ray disc with 100 GB of storage capacity of digital data.
Blu-ray Support
To enjoy the considerable benefits of a Blu-ray, one must have a Blu-ray (either desktop based or software) that allows the reading of Blu-ray. Blu-ray players need a codec MPEG-2 (which makes a player capable of playing HD DVD and DVD), a VC-1 codec and AVC or MPEG-4 codec. Movies stored on Blu-ray discs use any of the codecs mentioned. A film can also have more of a codec, provided when each codec used is compatible with Blu-ray technology.
