Can I play my blu-ray's DTS track on my old Dolby Digital Receiver?
My blu-ray player has a built in DTS decoder. Now can I get DTS sound through my Dolby Digital 5.1 receiver if I am connecting usin an optical cable. I don't have an hdmi connection on my receiver. I want to play my movie The Bank Job which doesn't have a DD5.1 track in english. Only an english 7.1DTS track and a French DD 5.1 audio track.
depending on your receiver...if you look on your receiver it will actually show a DTS icon somewhere on it if it has the ability to decode that type of signal, for example my yamaha receiver which is aprox. 5 years old is hooked up to my blu-ray player via an optical cable, I just have to select the dts track on my dvd and then select the sound setting of DTS on my receiver (most of the time there will be a button on your remote that will say dts on it) but once again if your receiver doesn't physically say dts somewhere on it this whole process won't work
the other thing that you can try is to hook up your blu-ray player directly to your tv with your hdmi cable and then most tvs that accept hdmi will also have a fiber optic output on them as well. the concept for this hookup is this: your dvd player is decoding the dts signal, passing it through the hdmi cable to your tv and rerouting its signal to the receiver via the fiber optic cable. both of these options that I have discussed might give you the exact same type of sound or one might end up better than the other, take a listen, because depending on the kinds and brands of your equipment the ways that they transmit and accept signal types will vary greatly...hope this all helps
