Using the Dell 1800MP projector in your home theater
After recently purchasing a new home, I decided to create a home theater in my basement light day. I bought the couches, put up the blackout blinds and found a 106 "HDTV format screen. However, after everything that does not have much money expensive to buy a home theater projector. I had a Dell 1800MP projector kicking around that I bought to use for data presentations and so I decided to try mounting my theater. Here are some helpful tips for others who might be considering doing something similar ...
1. The 1800MP comes equipped with keystone correction vertical. This means that if you need to point the projector up or down can correct the keystone effect. However, not equipped with horizontal keystone correction. To obtain a square image you need to ensure that the projector is centered on the screen. Otherwise, one side the image will be higher than the other.
2. You will notice that the Dell 1800MP not come with an HDMI or DVI port. I was able to connect the projector my Media Center PC through a VGA cable and it looks great. However, the S-Video image did not look as sharp. If you want a great looking image to consider getting a cable that converts component video to VGA.
3. The Dell 1800MP do not have many options to zoom or resize the image. This means you will have place the projector at the correct distance from the screen to get the image of being a right of your screen size. On my 106 "diagonal 16:9 HDTV format had to place the screen about 16 'away from the wall. Before mounting the projector on the ceiling, simply held up to find the exact point where projector fills the screen.
4. Many places will charge you an arm and a leg for a mounting bracket. However, you should be able to collect a reasonable support in an online auction site with no name for about $ 30 including shipping. The one I have the ability to turn the projector so that it can be pointed down or side slightly. This came in very handy when I was trying to get the image on the projector set up on my screen.
5. The menus for the Dell 1800MP is a lot of useful options for those who are going to need. There is a setting that will flip the image so the projector can be mounted upside down on the roof. Also there is a setting that will change the aspect ratio of the projected image to 16:9 if you're going to use an area of wide-screen display. You can use these options, along with controls for contrast, color and brightness to adjust the image until you are satisfied with the image. When the room is too dark you will see bars color black above and below the screen as the 1800MP is not a widescreen projector design. This is not really a big deal but I thought I'd mention.
I am the first to admit that the Dell 1800MP is not as good as HD projector 1080p was considering buying. However, since the Dell was only about $ 600 and had, I think it's a pretty good choice. And it works great with my Media Center.
